Park Hyatt Tokyo

What do Scarlett Johansson and the pool at the Park Hyatt Tokyo have in common? Both beautiful icons became world-famous after starring in "Lost in Translation." Most of Sofia Coppola's 2001 movie, which also starred Bill Murray, was shot at the luxury hotel, which overlooks much of Tokyo from a perch atop the Shinjuku Park Tower.

Johansson's character swims in the pool one morning and runs into Murray's character afterwards, both wearing plush white bathrobes. Murray asks, "It's a cool pool, isn't?" To which Johansson replies, "Yeah, it's nice."

The pool at the Park Hyatt Tokyo is, as they say, a cool and nice, with a striking glass enclosure and jaw-dropping views of the city from 47 floors up. Two decades after the release of "Lost in Translation", it remains one of the best hotel pools in Tokyo, and one of the most beautiful indoor pools in the world.

Yet the Park Hyatt Tokyo, having opened in 1994, is starting to show its age. The pool is just 66 feet, or 20 meters, long. That's shorter than most lap swimmers prefer, and shorter than the pools at the Aman, Conrad and Tokyo Prince hotels in Tokyo. While its design and views will keep it among the most iconic hotel pools around, there are better swims to be had.
